Drug Dealing Bloggers: Personal Development's Dark Side

When you look at the personal development world… You might think it's all good and positive. But there's a side of it that you're probably not aware of. It's what I call the “Dark side”. Each time you sign up for an inspirational newsletter it's like you're subscribing to a drug delivery service. A dose of positivity hits your inbox, you read it and think “YES, I should do that”. You imagine how awesome your future self is going to be and you get a rush of feel good emotions from it. Then you look for your next “hit” and the cycle repeats itself. Here's the problem: NOTHING CHANGES. I call it Inspiration Entertainment Syndrome because we read just to amuse ourselves and don't actually implement the material. This isn't just theory. I've seen this emerge as a clear pattern through the hundreds of survey responses I've collected while researching this issue, not to mention countless times in the lives of my clients and readers. And over time you feel frustrated because you have the knowledge of how you want to behave but it doesn't match up with reality. You have all of these concepts and tools related to “becoming the best version of yourself” but that best version never comes to fruition. There is a gap between knowledge and action. And the more and more you consume, the more overwhelmed you feel because you know you are just scratching the surface of all there is to learn. This isn't to say that you haven't succeeded in making some changes but let's be honest, with the amount of information you consume you could be doing A LOT better. But… is it all your fault? As a blogger, it's especially difficult to say but I'm going to let you in on it anyway. Be forewarned: Once you know it, it will change the way you see the books, blogs, and the emails you read forever. I'm going to tell you personal development's dirty little secret: Industry success is not aligned with your personal success. That’s because Success for the industry is based on HOW MUCH you consume, not on the actual RESULTS. People are constantly buying new books … but do the authors really care how much you apply? Do these books actually make a difference?
Here’s the hard truth: A ton of so-called “experts” have great stories to tell, but don’t know much about the science of behavior change. Reading their stuff is usually not much more than entertainment.

Then What Happens ?

When these elements come together, something astounding happens. A person's life becomes turbocharged. Each day becomes an adventure packed with fun and excitement because they know that any challenge that is thrown them, they can tackle. It starts to feel like a game. They walk around with a smile, which would appear to be for no good reason to an outsider. However, the outsider doesn't know what they know. They are certain that if they put their mind to something, with the right effort and the right approach, it becomes inevitable. It isn't about being lucky. It's just a matter of time. Confidence becomes unshakeable. People can’t help but be impressed. Doors start flying open that before, weren't even on the radar. The world becomes a place of abundant possibility.
Meanwhile, What Do "Underachievers" Do ?
First, let's make a distinction. There are two types of underachievers: low potential and high potential. Low potential underachievers don't really care about achieving more, they don't want to put in the work or exert the effort to become better. They just sort of “go with the flow” most of the time and are satisfied in letting the world happen to them rather than making an impact on the world High potential underachievers, on the other hand, want desperately to excel but they know they just aren't playing at the top of their game. They can even be relatively successful already but they have way more potential than they are living up to. Despite good intentions, they have a hard time really capitalizing on this urge to become the best version of themselves. I won't waste any more time talking about low potential underachievers. Believe me, they clicked off of this page a few paragraphs in… Where do high potential underachievers go wrong ?
Pitfall #1: They Never Leave the Starting Line
Sometimes changes remain a fantasy. The gap between idea and action is never bridged. High potential underachievers run into this problem frequently. They will take the time to read a super inspiring blog post on say “7 Way to Stop Procrastination Now” and they imagine themselves as a productivity machine in the future but that future never comes. But then they move onto the next article without ever taking steps to apply what they just learned. Why? Various Reasons: No clear starting point. Easily Sidetracked. Fear of doing it wrong. Forgetfulness. All of these things get in the way. However, there are times when someone breaks through this barrier, but then they run into an entirely different problem…
Pitfall #2: They Only Have Success in Short Bursts
High potential underachievers might keep hearing about all of the awesome benefits of meditation so they give it a shot and for a week or two and they're going strong. They feel proud of themselves for sticking to their commitment. Then something happens. Life gets in the way somehow. They wake up late one day or you had an unusually busy day at work and you're just too tired. So you tell yourself “I can skip today. Just today.” So one day without meditation turns into two and two into five. Before they know it they haven't meditated in weeks.. They are back to square one feeling frustrated that you let yourself slip…again. They experienced success but only in a short burst. They can’t keep it consistent. If that wasn’t enough, the third mistake is less obvious and equally as damaging…
Pitfall #3: They have a “Sabotage System” rather than a Support System
Ambition can be a lonely game. Sometimes friends and family of driven people don’t get why they are so charged up on becoming the best version of themselves. The result: most people lack the support they need to achieve their goals. Imagine yourself in this situation You're just starting your new diet and for a few days you're ROCKING IT. It feels like you mastered junk food and it no longer has control on you. Then your roommate orders a pizza one night. He asks, “Want a slice?” You can't resist because the pizza sitting there in front of you just looks too damn good. “Ahhh What the hell. I've earned it.” And before you know it your diet is junk food infused just as it was before. This happens way more than we'd like to admit. Unless you're one of the lucky few, the people around us don't often help us reach our goals. It's like an uphill battle we are going alone that is littered with landmines and booby traps. It's very hard to navigate that rocky terrain without a group of allies. A set of people who “get” you and want to help you reach your goals, who’ll help you get back on track if you fall off. What happens when you combine these 3 pitfalls? You end up spinning your wheels … You feel like you're letting yourself down. This makes you feel frustrated and disappointed with yourself.
And it makes you wonder… Is there something wrong with me? Am I doomed to stay stuck like this forever? The answer is… it depends It depends the decisions you'll make, starting today.

Struggle, Frustration and Getting Drunk in Australia

A few years ago, I hit a really rough spot in my life. After quitting a corporate job I hated, I decided to apply to an awesome Grad School program in California. I was very confident I would get in so I only applied to this one school. Big mistake. I got rejected, and I was shattered. All my dreams of living the “California Dream” were destroyed… and I had absolutely no idea what to do next. I had no choice but to move back in with my mom and sleep on her couch. And thus began the toughest 5 months of my life. I applied to job after job, and nothing was working for me. My self-esteem went down the drain, my frustration grew with each passing day, and I felt totally stuck. I grew a beard and started wearing sweatpants every day. I was a mess.
One day, out of the blue, I picked up a book named 7 Habits of Highly Effective People off my mom's bookshelf. I didn't know what it was about… Heck, I didn't even know what personal development was. But at that point, I had nothing to lose. I started reading the book, and remember thinking this was pretty interesting, but I had no idea how to actually apply this stuff to my own life. A few weeks later, I decided to move to Australia. When I got there, I felt like I was getting a fresh start, so I decide to dive even deeper into personal development. I started reading book after book, and really enjoyed it… I was exposed to new strategies, new ways of thinking, and getting really inspired by other people's success. But the truth of the matter is, I wasn't making much progress in my life. I was applying only a tiny fraction of what I was reading… All this reading was telling me what to do, but it wasn’t giving me the discipline or structure to actually do it. It felt like no matter how hard I tried I was doomed to fall back into my old ways within a few weeks. I was reading all this stuff, but there was no method to my madness. I was just gathering random bits of information instead of following a logical curriculum. I had no guidance, no mentorship, no one to challenge me and help me integrate what I was reading about. I was the typical example of a “Personal Development Junkie”. Lots of time spent “getting high” off personal development, very few results to show for it. I knew I was letting myself down, and yet I kept doing the same thing again and again. When Christmas rolled around that year, I had one of the worst days of my life. It was my first Christmas ever away from my family, and I felt extremely sad. It was my first ever Christmas away from my family, and not knowing what to do with myself, I got drunk (not the fun kind of drunk… the depressed kind). I sat on the beach for several hours, drinking way too much Emu (a local beer) and in the midst of my drunken stupor, I started reflecting on the current state of my life… What the hell was I doing? Why weren't things working the way I wanted them to? Why wasn't I getting better at life, even though I was spending all this time studying how to do it? And then it hit me. It wasn’t doing it all wrong… and it certainly wasn’t all my fault. I realized that my failure was the product of a broken system. Right there and then, I decided I had enough.. Enough excuses. Enough disappointment. Enough mediocrity. Enough trying to get better results. That’s when I decided to radically change my approach…

Going From Frustration to Freedom

Over the next few months, I became a man on a mission. I started studying the “anomalies”-- the people who had achieved or were achieving extraordinary results in their field. The people who were real-world Superhumans. I wanted to figure out how these Top Performers had become who they were, knowing that they most likely hadn’t followed the traditional system. I started extracting strategies and principles based on the way they lived their lives, and analyzing the kind of ritual and systems they had in place to achieve daily excellence. I realized that their learning had been systematic-- they had followed an organized curriculum instead of gathering random bits of information. It became clear that they had had powerful mentors and teachers along the way who had helped them achieve success much faster than they could have on their own. As time went by, I started experimenting relentlessly, building on what I was learning and developing my own personal development system. The course I was taking had great information, but it was still lacking some structures, accountability and concrete ways to implement was I was learning. I developed my own Big 3 System of implementation, I started doing comfort zone challenges, and applied scientifically-proven methods of building new habits. I created structures that preserved my willpower while creating the behaviors I wanted from myself. I felt happier, more confident, and mentally sharper than I had ever been. It was amazing, and I needed to share it with the world.
That's when I started The Feel Good Lifestyle. That was 2 years ago. As the site grew and people read my articles, more and more people turned to me for guidance. At first it was close friends, then it was my readers, and eventually it was paid clients. And these were all kinds of people, from all kinds of backgrounds. And these were all kinds of people, from all kinds of backgrounds.Men and women, some young, some old, some very smart and some of regular intelligence… But there was one thing in common…. As they start applying my system, something special happened. They went from “wanting” to improve… To actually improving, and fast. They went from being “stuck” to having momentum and feeling proud of themselves. I realized that it wasn't so much the person that made the difference, but rather the mindset they developed and the system they used. For the past 2 years, I've been refining my methods, testing them on hundreds of people (and continually testing on myself), and the results have been extraordinary. This has allowed me to speak about personal development at universities such as Stanford and UCLA, to write for major blogs like Positively Positive, Tiny Buddha and High Existence, and to work with clients from all over the world. Recently, I was featured in a 4-part series about productivity in Fast Company, one of the most respected websites/magazines for entrepreneurs in the world. But as I gathered insights and feedback, I realized that working one-on-one with clients wasn't the best way to spread my method to the world.
